Accommodation is the single biggest factor in your safari cost — typically accounting for 40–55% of the total budget. The difference between a budget tented camp and an exclusive luxury lodge can be $1,000+ per person per night. Everything else — park fees, transport, experiences — is relatively fixed regardless of which style you choose.
The largest variable — from $80/night at a budget camp to $2,500+/night at an exclusive lodge. Your accommodation choice has more impact on your total cost than any other factor.
Peak season (July–October) costs 20–40% more than low season (March–June). The Great Migration months of August and September command the highest rates across all accommodation tiers.
Kenya Wildlife Service park fees are charged per person per day — $200/day in the Masai Mara, $120/day in Amboseli. For a 7-day safari, park fees alone can total $800–$1,400 per adult.
Choosing to fly between parks adds $400–$800 per person versus driving. Flying saves 5–6 hours of road travel per leg and is worth it on shorter trips. Road safaris are better value on 7+ day itineraries.
Vehicle costs are shared. A solo traveller pays the full vehicle rate — often $150–$200/day. Two people sharing cuts that in half. Families of 4–6 get the best per-person value on private vehicles.
Add-on experiences are the smallest cost driver but add significant value. A hot air balloon safari ($550 pp) is the most popular add-on. Bush breakfasts and sundowners are often included at premium camps.
Park fees and accommodation costs vary significantly between Kenya's national parks and conservancies. The Masai Mara is the most expensive — high park fees and premium lodge pricing reflect its status as Kenya's most sought-after wildlife destination. Tsavo and Meru offer excellent wildlife at significantly lower costs.

Travelling in June instead of August can save 25–35% on your total safari cost — with almost no reduction in wildlife quality. The Great Migration is spectacular in both months, but August commands peak prices while June offers excellent game viewing at mid-season rates.
Great Migration river crossings. Highest wildlife density. Most expensive. Book 6–12 months ahead for premium camps.
Excellent wildlife viewing. Dry conditions. Good availability. Best balance of quality and value.
Good value, fewer visitors. January–February excellent for Amboseli and calving season. November for green landscape photography.
Long rains. Some roads inaccessible. Dramatically cheaper. Good for certain parks — avoid Amboseli. Beautiful green landscapes.
Safari Travel Plus tip: If budget is a priority, June is the sweet spot — dry season conditions, no peak prices, excellent game viewing across all parks. October is a close second with the added benefit of very clear Kilimanjaro views from Amboseli.
A 7-day Kenya safari typically costs between $2,800 and $8,500+ per person depending on accommodation style and parks visited. A budget 7-day safari visiting the Masai Mara and Amboseli by road costs approximately $2,800–$3,500 per person. A mid-range version of the same itinerary costs $4,500–$6,000. A luxury fly-in version costs $7,000–$10,000+. Use the calculator above to get an estimate for your specific preferences.
Yes — Kenya consistently ranks among the world's top safari destinations because the wildlife density and diversity are exceptional across multiple parks. The Masai Mara offers near-certain Big Five sightings. Amboseli delivers the most intimate elephant encounters in Africa. Samburu has species found nowhere else. The cost reflects genuine value — park fees fund wildlife conservation, accommodation supports local communities, and the experience is difficult to replicate elsewhere. Most visitors describe their Kenya safari as one of the most significant travel experiences of their lives.
The cheapest time for a Kenya safari is April and May (long rains) when prices drop 25–35% below peak rates. However some parks and roads become inaccessible during heavy rains. The best value months that still offer excellent wildlife are June (start of dry season, mid-season prices) and October–November (short dry spell, shoulder season rates). Safari Travel Plus recommends June as the optimal balance of price and conditions.
A family of 4 (2 adults + 2 children aged 8 and 12) on a 7-day mid-range Kenya safari typically costs $12,000–$18,000 total. This works out to $3,000–$4,500 per adult and $1,500–$2,500 per child. Families benefit significantly from sharing a private vehicle — the per-person cost drops with group size. Children under 5 pay reduced or zero park fees at most parks. Safari Travel Plus specialises in family safaris and can advise on the most child-friendly lodges and itineraries.
A Safari Travel Plus safari package typically includes accommodation, all meals, game drives, park fees and airport transfers. Not included: international flights to Nairobi, Kenya eTA ($30), travel insurance, hot air balloon safaris, alcoholic drinks at some lodges, laundry, tips for guides and camp staff (typically $15–$25 per person per day is customary), and personal expenses. We provide a full itemised quote so there are no surprises.
A 3-night Masai Mara safari costs approximately $850–$1,200 per person at budget lodges, $1,500–$2,200 at mid-range camps, and $2,500–$5,000+ at luxury tented camps. These estimates include accommodation, meals, game drives, park fees and Nairobi transfers. Flying to the Mara adds $250–$450 per person return versus driving. August peak season rates are 25–30% higher than June rates for the same lodges.
Yes — Safari Travel Plus includes all park fees in your quoted safari price. Kenya Wildlife Service fees are $200 per adult per day in the Masai Mara and $120 per adult per day in Amboseli. For a 3-night Mara stay that is $600 in park fees per adult — a significant cost that some budget operators quote separately. We always show a full inclusive price with no hidden additions.
The most effective ways to reduce your Kenya safari cost: travel in June or October rather than July–September (saves 15–25%); drive between parks rather than flying (saves $400–$800 per person); travel in a group of 4+ to share vehicle costs; choose mid-range lodges rather than luxury (the wildlife is identical); combine two parks rather than three to reduce park fees and transport; book 6–9 months ahead for better availability and occasionally better rates. Safari Travel Plus will always advise on the best value options for your specific priorities.
