Kenya in October

The tail of the Great Migration, golden dry-season plains, and the year's best value before the December peak — with one honest catch worth knowing.

Is October a good time to visit Kenya?

Yes — early to mid-October is one of Kenya's best shoulder-season windows. You get the tail end of the Great Migration, excellent dry-season game viewing and fewer crowds than August. The one honest catch: the short rains usually begin in mid-to-late October, so the earlier in the month you travel, the better.

The honest catch: short rains typically begin mid-to-late October. Early October is drier with easier game viewing; late October turns greener and wetter, which thickens vegetation and can make wildlife harder to spot.

What To Expect

Kenya weather in October

October starts dry and ends greener. The short rains usually arrive mid-to-late month, so conditions vary by region — and by exactly when in October you travel. These are typical ranges; every year differs.

Nairobi & Highlands
11–26°C

Mild and mostly sunny, cool mornings and evenings. Showers more likely late month.

Masai Mara
16–30°C

Warm days, cool mornings ideal for game drives. Dry early October; greener and wetter late month.

Amboseli
16–32°C

Warm and lower-altitude. Clearest Kilimanjaro views tend to be early morning before cloud builds.

The Coast / Diani
23–31°C

Warm, humid and largely sunny. October opens the best beach and diving window.

The early vs late October rule

The first half of October is typically dry with the easiest game viewing. From mid-to-late October the short rains begin — the landscape turns lush and photogenic, but thicker vegetation and animal movement can make wildlife harder to spot. If game viewing is your priority, favour early October.

The Headline Event

The Great Migration in October

October is the tail end of the Great Migration in the Masai Mara. Here's the honest picture.

What stage is it at?

By October the herds that crossed into the Mara from July are beginning their slow return south toward the Serengeti, triggered by the shifting rains. Large numbers of wildebeest and zebra are usually still present, especially early in the month.

Do river crossings still happen?

Yes — late Mara River crossings are possible in October, most likely in the first half of the month, but they become less frequent and less predictable as the herds move south. Crossings are never guaranteed in any month; they depend on the herds, the grass and the rains.

October vs August

August is peak crossing season — more herds, more crossings, but far more vehicles and higher prices. October trades some crossing certainty for thinner crowds, softer light, better value and a more relaxed, exclusive feel at sightings.

Our honest advice: if witnessing a river crossing is the single most important thing to you, travel in the first half of October — or consider August to September. If you want excellent game viewing, the migration atmosphere and far fewer crowds, October is a wonderful, better-value choice.
